About Us

Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital is the largest government healthcare facility, providing tertiary level healthcare in the Maldives. Located in the capital city Male’, with approximately 300 beds, IGMH provides services to around 150 thousand people living in the city, plus specialist referral services for patients both domestic and foreign.

With a constant strive to provide high quality safe patient care through a culture of learning and innovation, IGMH has been establishing new specialist departments over the recent years, nearing to a total of 21 departments by the beginning of 2018.

Along with specialist consultations, IGMH houses modern investigative and imaging technologies in diagnostics, providing efficient patient-centered healthcare; fully covered by the social healthcare insurance – Aasandha.

Aspiring to be the trusted leader and to provide holistic and comprehensive health care service to the country, IGMH shares its knowledge with other national healthcare facilities and runs its own Medical Internship Program; helping to develop healthcare providers of the nation.

History  The IGMH today we see is the present development of healthcare services commenced by the Maldivian government 70 years ago. The first healthcare facility providing modern medical care was established on 11th January 1948 under the name “Dakutaruge”.  Later government established and started the medical healthcare services in Central Hospital which served the nation for several years. Central Hopsital’s services were moved to the current facility, with the help of Indian Government and the name was changed to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, on 21st April 1996
